A complete SELL-OUT within hours! Introducing the latest innovative coin from the Royal Canadian Mint…
Innovation is nothing new to The Royal Canadian Mint. Whether it be a shape, size or never before-seen technology, the Mint are always looking for ways to push the limits on what can be achieved next in the minting world.
And, over the last few years, the results have been some of the world’s most stunning, technologically advanced coins, with sell-outs almost guaranteed.
So, you can imagine the excitement of collectors from all over the world when the latest interactive coin from Royal Canadian Mint was released earlier this month…
The Hummingbird and Bloom 5oz Pure Silver Coin
This stunning BRAND NEW release features something that has been highly revered by collectors since it was first seen back in 2018…
But when is a coin not just coin? When it’s also an interactive Bloom with a moving Hummingbird – miniaturised of course!
The cutting edge gyroscopic technology used to bring this coin to life truly is outstanding as it has allowed the coin to become interactive. Whilst the coin is encapsulated inside its protective case, the Hummingbird elegantly hovers around a gorgeous Zinnia Bloom, much like it does in the wild.
Unfortunately, images can only go some way towards showing the glory of this coin, so I ask you, in fact I implore you, to please take some time to look at the below video to truly appreciate its beauty:
It is so visually impressive that words will never be able to do it justice. Nothing can compare to holding the coin struck from a full 5oz of Fine Silver in your hand and feeling the groundbreaking gyroscopic technology elegantly move a 24ct Gold-plated Hummingbird around a Rose-gold Zinnia.
It is this bloom that is even more impressive than the Royal Canadian Mints predecessors – utilizing 24ct Rose-Gold to show off the Zinnia’s tear-drop petals and contrast the Proof Silver base that features even more blooms.
In 2018, the first coin to use this technology was released, and to say it was popular would be an understatement. Featuring a Bumblebee [Link to Bumble Bee blog ‘Coin of 2018’] hovering around a flower, it was voted Collector’s Gallery favourite coin of 2018. The coin was a world FIRST and completely SOLD-OUT within a matter of weeks at the Mint. And the same can be said for the second coin in the series, the Christmas Tree and Train,[Link to blog] which featured a classic train running the circumference of a Christmas Tree but completely SOLD-OUT before the official release date..
Not only are these sell-outs attributed to the quality, craftsmanship and uniqueness of these coins, but also to the extremely low edition limits. The BRAND NEW Hummingbird and Bloom interactive coins are strictly limited to just 1,250 collectors worldwide. When you consider the sell-out successes of the previous coins and the collectors who will want to be at the forefront in owning this enchanting new coin, demand has already proven to exceed availability.

The making of a true Masterpiece…
Each year Remembrance Sunday provides an opportunity for the nation to reflect on those brave men and women who gave their lives fighting for our freedom. But this year will be especially poignant. As we also commemorate the 80th Anniversary of one of the truly remarkable chapters in our nation’s history – the Battle of Britain.
Introducing the official 2020 Remembrance Masterpiece Silver 5oz Poppy Coin
There is one coin that avid collectors await the release of – the “Masterpiece Poppy Coin”. The name says it all. Cutting edge minting techniques and materials, representing the pinnacle of craftsmanship. But let me explain what makes this year’s Masterpiece Poppy so special…
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Take a look at the images and you’ll see that a single stylised Royal British Legion poppy, proudly sits on top of this coin. Multiple poppies have then been engraved into the surface of the coin, resulting in an exceptional 3 dimensional effect.
But the incredibly rare facet of this year’s poppy coin is that it’s been crafted from a genuine piece of Spitfire.
Expertly crafted from a Spitfire with a remarkable story to tell
Incredibly, this year, the silver poppy that adorns the reverse of each of these coins has been made from a piece of Spitfire PM631 – ensuring each coin is uniquely different and features a piece of tangible aerial history.
Originally built in late 1945, the Spitfire PM631 saw service with the Battle of Britain memorial flight for nearly FIFTY years between 1957 and 2006. You may also remember that it had a starring role in a famous WWII Movie – Battle of Britain, made in 1969.
Once the Spitfire piece has been melted down and poured into a shaped mould, it is cooled and cleaned to create the high-relief poppy. After this, it is laser engraved with the official Spitfire plane from which the metal was taken – PM631. Check out the images below to see the process the Spitfire metal goes through to come a Masterpiece poppy…
But even then, it is important to remember, this is NOT a cast piece. The surface of the coin has actually been struck in sterling silver and has then expertly plated in 24ct gold. The finish is a stunning matte appearance achieved using a technique called ‘Sandblasting’. This means it has all of the detail that you expect from a commemorative coin but allows you to touch the coin and hold a genuine, iconic piece of history in the palm of your hand.
As I am sure you can appreciate, given all of the individual elements that have to be carefully curated for each individual coin, the edition limit as a consequence is incredibly low. In fact, only 300 of these coins have been produced, with number one fittingly being donated to The Royal British Legion themselves. Which means only 299 coins remain for collectors.
We do not expect these coins to be around for long. And remember, for each coin sold a donation will go straight to The Royal British Legion in support of all their work.
Available now – with a donation to The Royal British Legion
The 2020 Masterpiece 5oz Silver Proof Poppy Coin is available to own right now from The Westminster Collection, although they are expected to sell out quickly.
To further support the work of The Royal British Legion, a donation of £59.50 from the sale of each coin will go directly to the charity, helping them to continue to provide financial, social and life-long support to the Armed Forces community.
£1,100,000 Milestone
What’s more, since our partnership began and through the sales of commemorative Remembrance and Poppy-themed coins, collectors have helped raise an incredible £1.1 Million for The Royal British Legion!
This is an achievement that everyone is immensely proud of, and we are hugely thankful to collectors for helping raise such an amazing amount.

Five things you need to know about the world’s most expensive coin…
You might have heard in the news recently that the world’s most expensive coin is due to be sold at auction next month.
The 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar is believed to be the first silver dollar to be struck by the US Mint. It was last for sale in 2013 and was auctioned for just over $10 Million Dollars, making it the most expensive coin in the world.
The First US Dollar
In 1792, the US Congress issued an act stating that the Dollar was to be the cornerstone of US coinage. It was to be based on the Spanish Silver Dollar which was already widely used throughout the Americas. The act also stated that coins should include a symbol of Lady Liberty as well as an eagle – two icons that remain today on many US coins.
Where the nickname came from
The coin was designed by Robert Scot, who was Chief Engraver at the US Mint. His take on the bust of Liberty is what gave rise to the nickname of the coin with its detailed hair ‘flowing’ from the head of Lady Liberty. There are also fifteen stars on the coin, to represent each of the 15 states that had ratified the Constitution.
Was it just a PR stunt?
It’s thought that because the US was still struggling from the impact of the War of Independence it didn’t have access to much silver and other precious metals. Historians have argued that the introduction of a silver dollar was a way to showcase the power and capability of the US.
Very few of the 1794 Dollars were issued but they weren’t released into general circulation. They were mostly given to international VIPs or important congressmen, further adding fuel to the rumours that the Dollar was originally issued as part of a PR stunt.
Struck on just one day in October
Only 1,758 of these coins were struck, and according to the National Museum of American History, they were all minted on the same day. It’s thought that of this tiny number, less than 150 still survive today. Many would have been hidden forever, or melted down for their precious metal content, adding to the coin’s collectability.
It’s given rise to one of the most competitive collecting markets worldwide…
Eight of the top ten most expensive coins are US coins and the market is one of the most competitive around the world. Whether it’s the Coin of the Cowboys, the Mercury Dime, or even the first Half Dollar to feature a non-president, US coins have some of the most collectable stories attached to them. It’s hardly surprising that many collectors are looking to source American coins for their collection these days.
The Flowing Hair Dollar is due to be sold on October 8th 2020. How much do you think it will sell for this time? Let us know in the comments below!
