The Westminster Collection raises £1.1 Million for The Royal British Legion!

Earlier this year we received some incredible news, something that we would have never anticipated so soon, we hit another incredible company milestone.

Through the sales of commemorative Remembrance and Poppy-themed coins, collectors have helped raise an incredible £1.1 Million for The Royal British Legion!

This is an achievement that everyone is immensely proud of, and we are hugely thankful to collectors for helping raise such an amazing amount.

£1.1 Million raised means you could have funded 45 specialist case workers dedicated to meeting the unique needs of the UK Armed Forces Community.

We are delighted to see that our 16 years partnership with The Royal British Legion has raised such an amazing amount to support the Armed Forces community and their families.

This of course is no doubt in-part due to the fantastic reception that the 2019 Remembrance Day coins received when they were issued last year, including the First Official Remembrance Poppy £2 Coin.

The Royal British Legion provides lifelong support to serving and ex-serving personnel and their families. People need help for many different reasons. They may be facing employment issues or financial difficulties, or may need help related to housing, homelessness or living independently. They may face mental and physical health challenges, need care in later life or need help building local community connections. Whatever issues people face, the Legion’s staff and volunteers are trained so they can direct enquiries to the most appropriate service. And, if there is ever a reason that they can’t help, the Legion’s vast network of partner charities and organisations means that they will know someone who can.

Why this year’s official Poppy coin is one of the most poignant yet…

The official new Poppy Coin has just been issued in support of The Royal British Legion and this year the design features the stylised poppy that’s synonymous with the Legion with particularly poignant wording from the ‘Ode of Remembrance’.

I caught up with designer Christopher Lloyd to ask him about the story behind his design:

Christopher Lloyd, designer of the Official Poppy Coin 2017

“As the coin is the only official coin to support The Royal British Legion, the most important part of the coin had to be the Legion’s stylised poppy. I wanted to make this the centrepiece of the coin so decided to highlight the poppy in full colour.”

“The brief this year was to use the wording from Laurence Binyon’s famous poem ‘For the Fallen’ which was written during the First World War. I felt the words ‘We Will Remember Them’ were particularly poignant, especially as it forms part of the ‘Ode of Remembrance’ which is recited at remembrance services across the world, so I gave these special words the same red highlighting as the poppy itself to make it really stand out”.

The Official 2016 “Lest We Forget” £5 Poppy Coin

The official new Poppy Coin has just been issued in support of The Royal British Legion, and this year it is especially poignant.

2016 is a milestone year as it marks the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, the First World War battle that has come to symbolise the awful tragedy of the conflict.

To pay respect to those who served, the new coin’s design has been inspired by the falling poppies at the annual Festival of Remembrance – held in the Royal Albert Hall.

I caught up with designer Matt Tindall to ask him about the design:

“As this is the only official Poppy coin issued in support of The Royal British Legion I wanted to make sure the design was instantly recognisable, yet also had a subtle reference to the importance of the year 2016.

“The wording “Lest We Forget” from Laurence Binyon’s Ode of Remembrance seemed particularly fitting – and the quotation is covered by 11 falling poppies which of course represent the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Designing the official 2016 Poppy Coin

“My grandfather served during the First World War in the South Staffordshire Regiment so it was a real honour to be asked to design the Poppy Coin. The Royal British Legion has always had such an important role in this country and I only hope this coin goes some way to helping their work.”
