Every single word has been meticulously engraved onto the die, a painstaking process that requires remarkable precision and expertise. Skilled artisans devoted countless hours to ensuring that each letter has been flawlessly etched.
Once the micro-engraving is complete, the die is ready to undergo the next step in the coin production process. With force and finesse, it is expertly struck multiple times, employing immense pressure to achieve the pristine Proof finish which brings the micro-engraved words to life.
Of course, fitting a 9 minute speech onto a coin presented a major challenge. That’s why each coin has been struck from FIVE OUNCES of Pure Silver and measure at an incredible 100mm.

The Designs
To celebrate the most remarkable milestones of Queen Elizabeth II’s life, The Royal Canadian Mint have issued three stunning Silver Proof coins – in one complete collection!
Expertly struck from 1oz of 99.99% ultra-fine silver to a flawless proof finish, each coin has been thoughtfully inspired by three famous photographs from Queen Elizabeth II’s extraordinary life.
The first coin depicts Elizabeth II as a child in the arms of her father King George.
Not only is King George VI and his daughter a rare sighting for reverse designs, but a young Elizabeth II is also an exceptional feature for coinage.
Equally as unique, the second coin portrays Elizabeth II in military uniform during her time in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service.
Finally, the third and arguably most recognisable depiction of our Longest Reigning Monarch is inspired by a photograph from a Royal Visit in her later years.
Special Obverse
What’s more, all three Silver coins in this collection feature a special tribute obverse, combining all four Canadian effigies of Elizabeth II. Marked by a small Tudor rose, this unique obverse design honours Elizabeth II’s coinage since her coronation in 1953.
This tribute obverse is unique to this range of coins, and integrates the designs of previous obverse designers: Susanna Blunt, Dora de Pédery-Hunt, Arnold Machin, and Mary Gillick.

King Charles III awards Maundy Money for the first time as reigning monarch
Maundy Thursday is an Easter tradition that dates back to 1622 during the reign of Charles II. The tradition involves the monarch gifting members of the public special coins as part of a special ceremony.
His Majesty attends his first Maundy Service as King
Today, King Charles III attended his first Maundy service as reigning monarch at York Minster. Hundreds of people lined the streets approaching the Minster, many arriving before 7am to get a front row spot.

The King and Queen Consort, Camilla arrived at the cathedral around 11am and preceded to award specially minted coins to 148 people in recognition of their work for their church and community. The service concluded with the national anthem and a blessing.
What coins were awarded?
The coins awarded included a white purse containing silver Maundy coins equivalent in value to the age of the King. Also awarded was a red purse containing two commemorative coins.

This year, the commemorative coins gifted were a £5 coin issued to celebrate His Majesty’s upcoming 75th birthday and a 50p coin marking the 75th anniversary of the Windrush Generation. Both of these coins featured in the 2023 Annual Coin Set, which caused record breaking sell outs at the Royal Mint.
Within just 16 minutes of release, the Silver Proof and Silver Piedfort specifications of the 2023 Annual Set were no longer available to order at The Royal Mint. Other premium limited specifications sold out in less than an hour.

Queen’s Reign coin honours traditional Maundy money
The 2022 Queen’s Reign £5 coin honouring Charity and Patronage featured a design of traditional Maundy money. This represented Queen Elizabeth II’s advocacy and support of more than 600 charities across the UK and Commonwealth during her incredible 70 year reign.
